Hyperchains: Your Own L1 Chain

Hyperchains are here. That means you can finally stop trying to shoehorn your project into someone else’s blockchain rules. Want to set your own fees? Go for it. Want complete control over tokenomics? No problem. Hyperchains let you launch your own sovereign Level 1 blockchain while leveraging the scalability, security, and efficiency of Aeternity's technology stack—without the headaches of building from scratch.

Why Hyperchains?

Building a blockchain from scratch is a heroic endeavor—one that usually ends in regret, delays, and a whitepaper no one reads. You need to secure the network, ensure scalability, and develop a robust infrastructure—all while maintaining decentralization. Traditional Layer 2 solutions attempt to offload these challenges but come with trade-offs: you don’t control transaction fees, your users must pay in the base chain’s token, and your transactions compete with all other Layer 2 and Layer 1 activity on that chain. This congestion leads to unpredictable fees and limited sovereignty.

Hyperchains solve this by allowing you to launch your own blockchain where you set the rules. You choose the transaction fees, decide on the tokenomics, and operate independently while still leveraging Aeternity’s security and scalability features. Instead of relying on complex rollups, Hyperchains achieve scalability through a low-overhead Proof-of-Stake consensus, ensuring high throughput without bottlenecks. Security is enhanced by pinning your chain’s state to an external blockchain like Aeternity, Dogecoin, or Bitcoin, adding an extra layer of verifiability. Combined with Aeternity’s FATE VM and Sophia smart contracts, Hyperchains drastically reduce the risks of smart contract vulnerabilities, providing a safer and more efficient environment for decentralized applications.

How It Works

Hyperchains are fully independent blockchains that inherit security from a pinning chain but remain completely configurable by their creators. Unlike Layer 2 solutions, which are inherently dependent on the Layer 1 they operate on, Hyperchains run their own consensus and only use the pinning chain for added security and verification. This means you don’t compete for block space with other chains, leading to more stable fees and better performance.

As a Hyperchain creator, you decide on every aspect of your blockchain’s operation. Which token is used for fees? How are transactions validated? What governance model is in place? Everything is in your control. At the same time, you get access to Aeternity’s tech stack, including state channels for instant off-chain transactions, decentralized oracles for real-world data feeds, and the type-safe FATE VM for executing Sophia smart contracts. This enables fast, efficient, and secure execution without the complexity and limitations of traditional Layer 2 approaches. Hyperchains provide a balance between sovereignty and security, making them an ideal choice for projects that need performance without sacrificing decentralization.

Your Next Step

We are now in the release candidate phase for Hyperchains 1.0, meaning the technology is functional and ready for community testing. This is the last step before the official 1.0 release, and we invite developers, validators, and blockchain enthusiasts to put it through its paces, provide feedback, and help shape the final version.

Whether you're building a DeFi platform, NFT marketplace, decentralized social network, or a next-gen dApp, Hyperchains is the next generation blockchain to build on.

Now is the time to experiment, test, and contribute. Check out the Hyperchains release candidate and start building your own sovereign blockchain today:
